A choropleth map showing the number of charges per 100,000 residents (2011) related to the 2011 Vancouver Hockey Riot.

North Van City looked like they had a large number of rioters, so I expanded to include the district as well.

I want to overlay skytrain/seabus routes next.

Sounds like there’ll be more charges laid soon…

now now. Let’s not point fingers. :)

Given the graph I posted just before this, I was surprised that Surrey didn’t come out on top, and Maple Ridge had the highest proportion. And, who knows, maybe the next bunch of charges to be laid will be on West Van residents. If you see the data released, send it to me and we’ll find out! :)

So, Mr. Vanmega linked to a CBC map that used pie charts to show the distribution of charges related to the Vancouver riot. They let users download the data, so I did… and here’s a first quick stab at the data. (Bottom axis is total number of charges.)  Chart seemed easier to compare, although I have a few more ideas about how it could be presented (types of charges by hometown, for example). Tomorrow I might make a Choropleth map of the data - probably number of charges/population.
I would love to overlay the map with socio-economic data if we had more detailed information about the residence of people charged with those crimes. Understandably, the data was released in an aggregated form.
Anyone surprised that 25% of all the charges were laid on people with a home town of Surrey?
